Abstract Succumbing to Self-interest The Irony of Organisations Revealing Regarding Others Recommendations

Abstract The dark side of organisations is actually a phenomenon almost never dealt with a manager training programs and voiced of just in whispers in corporate and business tea areas. Conspiracies of silence, collusion, 'jobs for the boys', hidden agendas and complicite are just some of the difficulties that affect the quality of working existence of individuals and the effectiveness of organisations. The Johari Windows (Lutz, 1969) has been utilized here in a modified type to describe facets of the dark side of the enterprise and as just one way of bringing these to life for would be players in 'corporate games'. best Succumbing to Self-interest

" Well, individual speech end up like pictures, simply word images. When we addresses we paints a word photo that we wants others to view, but we only chemicals a part o' the picture exactly what is in our heads. The various other part, usually the most important part, we results in because it always be the truth, the actual picture. So that your ears will want eyes, to allow them to see how very much o' the real picture what be in the top be within the words! " (Ikey Solomon talking to Tommo and Hawke, the Potato Factory, 1995)

John Ralston Saul (1997) in the Unconscious Civilisation proposes that there is an almost childlike way in which society avoids the reality of its situation, choosing rather to believe a fantasy perpetuated by a corporatist ideology. Legitimacy lies with conformist consultant groups whom negotiate between themselves, supposedly for the regular good. More importantly for the purposes of this paper Saul also points to the idea that corporatism places us in the grip of self-interest or, probably more accurately, together with the inability to generate disinterested decisions at either a conscious or unconscious level. In either case, conscious or subconscious, the person is striving, at worst, for power and personal gain, or, best case scenario, for extended survival within a competitive and company environment. Saul stresses that people are in fact losing the have difficulties for democracy and individualism despite elevated access to knowledge, information and education. Rather we are succumbing, ‘…to the darker part within us and inside our society' (1997: 36). In this paper we will take up this theme within the context of organisations rather than the bigger society. We are interested in the ‘dark side' of organisations and the result this deeper side has on the quality of operating life of the individual and, eventually, on the organisation itself. Through this analysis a really clever file format and using the Johari Window (Lutz, 1969), dreamed up simply by Alan Davies, will be used to spell out the effect of corporatism and self-interest that is certainly unconsciously or perhaps consciously maintained us all. leading The Irony of Organisations This dark side of organisations is show in variety malevolent techniques such as: concealed agendas; entente and conspiracies of peace and quiet; jobs intended for the boys (and girls); victimisation; self-interest; and problem, for example. The motive for the irony can be typically unconscious and, as Saul (1997) advises, a part of out childlike incapacity to extensively understand what is occurring. Some of these subconscious motives are: the sightless belief inside the rhetoric that it is all for the communautaire good; concern and panic for a whole range of reasons from the anxiety about redundancy to a lack of expertise and expertise; and the requirement of recognition, such as. Chin-Ning Chu (1997) says that our existential sense of insecurity hard disks us to diminish our...
